My friend David and I work for an global company. We happen to sit in Mexico. We also happened to work with a lot of people from Canada and the US back at the time (2011). Separately , our colleague in Toronto offered we could stay with her and her family if we ever traveled to her city, and so we did.
We booked a flight from Monterrey, NL, Mexico to Montreal, QC, Canada with AA through Dallas with a 3 hour stop to switch planes.
Our Trip started on July 4th, 2012 ending on July 14th 2012.
The flight rate was around $600 - $800 USD with an Amex promo. We were told we were told we would probably spend around $100 CAD per day so considering we had paid for all of our hotels in advance each of us was carrying somewhere between $1.2k & $1.4k CAD.
I personally came back with almost $400 CAD but David came back barehanded... Will add links and photos to the important attractions we visited...
